Spring Cleaning your Website

spring clean your website. tune-up tips

Spring is in the air, and there's a spring in your step, but what about your website? Is it showing signs of life or is it more like your flower beds when they need some weeding? (And who likes to do weeding? Please show me that person). Once in a while, it is a good idea to re-evaluate your website. Your website is often the first impression potential clients or customers have of your business, so ensuring it's in top shape is crucial. Is it the best representation of your business? Is it serving your clients well? Is it easy to navigate?

Some easy steps to take when showing your website some needed attention:

  • Check your links: Do you have any dead ends- Are all your links linked to the right place - or any place? It’s a giant peeve of mine when I click a link for more information, etc., and I get a “page not found” instead. don’t do this to your website visitors! Check your links!

  • Check your visuals: Are your images high quality, crisp, and on brand? High quality images convey professionalism, so be sure to review your imagery regularly to ensure they align with your brand's messaging and evoke the desired emotions from your audience.

  • Forms tune-ups: If you have forms on your site - is the information that your clients enter getting into the right hands? Check the email connections or newsletter forms to make sure they are connecting the correct automations, and that the intended team member is getting messages.

  • CTAs: Do you have clear calls to action? After a visitor reads something on your site, what do you want them to do next to engage with you further? Make sure your navigation and calls to action lead them on that path.

  • Device Responsiveness: Is your website working on all devices and platforms? View your site on a mobile device, and if it doesn't look the way it should… that's what your visitors are seeing too.

Continue your website tune-up by checking out:

Page Loading Speed: In today's fast-paced world, users expect websites to load quickly. Slow loading times can frustrate visitors and lead them to abandon your site. Use tools like Google PageSpeed Insights to analyze your website's loading speed and make necessary optimizations, like optimizing images sizes.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO): Is your website optimized for search engines? Conduct keyword research to understand what terms your target audience is searching for, and optimize your website's content accordingly. Meta titles, descriptions, and headings should all be optimized to improve your site's visibility in search engine results.

Content Freshness: When was the last time you updated the content on your website? Fresh, relevant content not only keeps visitors engaged but also signals to search engines that your website is active and deserves higher rankings. Consider adding a blog section where you can regularly publish articles related to your industry.

Security: With cyber threats on the rise, ensuring the security of your website is paramount. Make sure your website has an SSL certificate installed to encrypt data transmitted between your visitors' browsers and your web server. Regularly update plugins, themes, and the core software of your content management system to patch security vulnerabilities.

Accessibility: Is your website accessible to users with disabilities? Make sure your website complies with accessibility standards such as the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). This includes providing alternative text for images, ensuring proper heading structure, and implementing keyboard navigation.

Analytics: Are you tracking the performance of your website? Utilize tools like Google Analytics to gain insights into your website's traffic, user behavior, and conversion rates. By analyzing this data, you can identify areas for improvement and make data-driven decisions to optimize your website further.

Social Proof: Incorporating social proof elements such as customer testimonials, case studies, and reviews can help build trust with potential clients or customers. Showcase positive feedback from satisfied clients to demonstrate the value of your products or services.

Remember, your website is not a one-time project but an ongoing endeavor that requires regular maintenance and updates. Does it work for your business, AND does it work for your visitors? By periodically evaluating and optimizing your website, you can ensure it remains a valuable asset that drives business growth.
