Mood Boards for inspiration and brand exploration

When I start a design project with a client, I often work with them to create a mood board as one of initial steps in the process. This makes sure we are sharing the same vibe for what they are envisioning, and helps me design their branded elements, like color palette and brand marks, and establish the look of their imagery that they will use to represent their brand or product. Many of my clients have had fantastic ideas about the direction for their brands or projects, and it’s a great time to initiate those conversations. A mood board can set the tone for a personal photo shoot, social media posts, and other visuals as well. A mood board, or some general “mood” guidance has helped me better communicate with clients about website designs, as well as with my book design clients.

My Pfeifer Design brand uses color inspiration from this photo that I took, that I used to develop my color palette. It speaks to my passion for color, especially turquoise, water, and flowers :)

Creating a moodboard is one of my first steps in the new brand development process. It helps visualize the ideas and overall feel for the brand and ensures that I'm on the same page as the client, in terms of the vibe, color palette, imagery, and design element styling that will represent the brand, before starting in on actual design concepts. I explain that this does not represent what anything will exactly resemble - I'm not out to copy anyone else's logo or website - but it's purpose is to start communication, draw iand set the tone for the direction of the brand - such as an industrial feel, bold colors, strong contemporary fonts or icons, and imagery that tells a story. The client can add in any inspiration that speaks to them too.

What kind of mood board would you make for your current mood? 🙄🥸🤪 Mine would reflect that I’m in the mood for some chocolate. But what else is new! Do you have any questions about my branding process? Ask me!✨
